Blog Prompt # 3: Expert Commentary, Academic Fields and Intellectual Diversity

When considering what disciplines are most visible in media today, I think it is key to recognize where you turn for media.  Not only do different networks present different messages, but different forms of media reach their audience in different ways.  Television can be harder hitting, louder and more engaging because you can visually connect with the subject.  In comparison, radio programs cannot always present themselves in the same manner simply because that could alienate their listeners.  Radio leaves much to the imagination of the listener that in today’s fast paced and engaging society is a hurdle to be cleared.  However, television and radio stations often have the same parent organization that try reach similar audiences through multiple methods which could lead to a manipulation of the messages to target intended audiences.

With all that said, I believe that today’s media focuses so much on politics and economics that other disciplines can get overshadowed very easily.  Since these appear to dominate discussion in my opinion, little diversity is seen on televisions or is heard over the airwaves.  Programs rotate talking heads on a weekly basis, but expect that the audience can connect with one of the personalities and will continue to consume the information presented by the particular media source.

Conversations in the media today are extremely focused on the U.S. government and the role individuals play within the government as well as how the government is moving forward with its agenda.  While these are of the utmost importance, the delivery of the messages through television, radio, and social media has flooded the public arena that many people appear to be turned off by the messages.   A problem with this disengagement is the reality that people are turning their backs on conversations that are desperate for differing voices and opinions.

There are many conversations taking place among individuals as well as on the media outlets today.  How people engage not just one another, but also the larger society around them is a great responsibility that needs to be recognized and accepted through participation.  Through participation people can begin to find solutions to problems that are faced every day.
